Robert Henry Lineberger
( October 26, 1920 - July 21, 2012 )
Robert Henry Lineberger, 91, of Country Club Road, Lincolnton, NC entered peacefully into life eternal on July 21 at his home. He was compassionate and kind to all - a true Southern gentleman. Born October 26, 1920 he was the son of the late Fleta Crowell Lineberger and Barnett Cornelius Lineberger. After graduating from Lincolnton High School, he graduated from Duke University with a degree in English and Journalism. Immediately after college, he enlisted in the US Army Air Force where he became a Captain. He ferried planes to different air bases and flew every type of plane in the air force except for three. During WWII he was a "Hump" pilot flying dangerous cargo missions over the Himalayan mountains of the China, Burma, India border. Mr. Lineberger was honored by placing his WWII story and picture on one of the battleship USS North Carolina's commerative walls. After WWII he worked briefly for The Atlanta Constitution. He returned to Lincolnton to join his father and brothers at Lineberger Brothers Cotton. Mr. Lineberger was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church, which his grandfather Crowell helped build, for all of his 91 years serving on various committees, teaching high school and adult Sunday school classes. He was also a faithful member of Holden Beach Chapel. In 1970, Mr. Lineberger became the first Republican Lincoln County Commissioner in over 50 years. He served on the NC Aeronautics Board for Governor James Martin,was a member of the Air Force Academy review board,served on the Lincoln-Gaston mental health board, was active with Kiwanis Club and was instrumental in founding the Flo Robinson Literary Competition. Mr. Lineberger was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Laura "Susty" Turbyfill, his brothers B. C. Lineberger Jr. and John Walter Lineberger. He is survived by his children, Laura Fleta Lineberger and Robert H. Lineberger, Jr. (Lois) of Lincolnton, four grandchildren; Logan Lineberger Lawing, Will Lineberger (Alesha), Mary Heather Lineberger, and Lydia Lineberger, one great grandchild Anderson Henry Lineberger. He is also survived by his dog Belle, a very loyal companion for 15 years. Bob-Bob, as he was affectionately called by friends and family, will be remembered as a great man who touched the lives of many people throughout the world. The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall from 6:30 - 8:00 Monday evening. Funeral service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County, The Humane Society, or First United Methodist Church building fund, 201 E. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.
