Obituaries

Mr. George D’Espard Fawcett, III, age 83, of 602 Battleground Road in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, January 20, 2013.

His funeral service will be 3:00 pm on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Miles Smith officiating.   Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:45 until 2:45 pm prior to the service at the church. 

Mr. Fawcett was born July 21, 1929 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late Thomas Garnet Fawcett, Sr. and Katie Lee Mills Fawcett.  He served in the United States Army and then later was the director of the YMCA. George’s hobby, or vocation, was the study and investigation of UFOs. 

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Payseur Freeman Fawcett of the home; a daughter, Laura Fawcett of New Haven, CT; a son, Christopher Fawcett of Tumwater, WA; a step-daughter, Kelly Salinas of Lincolnton; a step-son, Mark Freeman of Marietta, GA; a sister, Elizabeth Burke of Mt. Airy; ten step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
