Darrell Eugene Hovis, age 74 of Lincolnton went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 26, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with emphysema.
Funeral service will be 3:00pm, Tuesday October 29, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton. Rev. Dr. Stanley Spence and Rev. Phillip Campbell will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:30pm until 2:45pm at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery.
Mr. Hovis was born February 14, 1939 in Lincoln County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Namon Eugene Hovis and Cleta Setzer Hovis. Mr. Hovis attended Lincolnton High School. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. Mr. Hovis married Priscilla Goodson on January 29, 1961. He went to work at National Linen in Hickory; after working there for thirteen years, he and a friend bought a little country store in Iron Station, NC known as the Iron Station Superette. The co- owner’s wives joined the business later where they enjoyed 27 wonderful years at the store. After selling the store and retiring, they traveled together visiting every state except North Dakota. Darrell and Priscilla were active and faithful members of First Baptist Church of Lincolnton. Darrell loved his church, often attending when he was barely able.
Survivors include his loving wife, Priscilla Goodson Hovis of the home; son, Darrin Hovis and wife Karen of Bloomfield Hills , Michigan; brother, Ken Hovis and wife Linda of Lincolnton; sister, Gail Calloway and husband Rev. Jack Calloway of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Jason and Emily Hovis of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and his beloved dog Jake.
