Robert Henry Hawkins
( June 16, 1926 - March 18, 2015 )
Robert Henry “Hawk” Hawkins died peacefully on Wednesday, March 18 in Lincolnton after a brief illness. He was born on June 16, 1926 in Caroleen, NC, youngest child of Milo Gales Hawkins and Alice Elizabeth Phillips Hawkins. He was preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters, Dora, Oles, Alice, Madeline, Vera, Matilda, Perry, Frank, James, Paul, and Howard.
Hawk was also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth George Heavner Hawkins who died January 27, 2013. He is survived by his sons, Robin G. Hawkins and wife, Nancy, of Newton, and Kenneth W. Heavner and wife, Ann, of Lincolnton. Grandchildren are Tallie Stempien (Todd), Von Heavner (Ashley), Lisa Heavner, Kenny Michael, Rachel Hawkins, Sarah Cullen, and Rebekah Hawkins. Great –grandchildren are Keely Stempien, Konnor Stempien, Kenna Stempien, Nick Heavner and Nash Heavner. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Anyone who knew Hawk will remember him as a man of strong opinions, always ready with a smile and a story. He was a proud World War II and Korean Conflict veteran. He was also a card-carrying Democrat and would happily debate politics with anyone willing to listen and agree with him.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.
Hawk retired as a truck driver for Carolina Freight in Cherryville. He served as constable in Lincolnton Township in the 1960s. He was an entrepreneur who loved a bargain, and operated Hawk Hawkins Enterprises until his death.
The family rejoices that Hawk opened his heart to the saving grace of Jesus Christ just one week before he died. “He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. “ Psalm 40:2.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 22, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church in Lincolnton. Military and Masonic honors will be observed.
