Dr. Clyde Thomas Smith
( May 11, 1942 - March 20, 2015 )

Dr. Clyde Thomas Smith, age 72, of Lincolnton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2015.

A Celebration of his Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015, at Covenant Bible Church with Rev. Mike Devine officiating.  His body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow in the Cox Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Dr. Smith was born May 11, 1942, in Gaston County, to the late John Price and Nell Mullis Smith.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, William Price Smith.

Dr. Smith was retired after 33 years in Public Education, 30 of which were with Lincoln County Schools.   He served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at Lincolnton High School, Oaklawn Elementary and Iron Station Elementary.  He was Headmaster at Lincoln Christian Academy for nine years.  Dr. Smith was an Adjunct Professor at Gardner Webb University – Graduate School of Education, and at Gaston College.  His community involvement consisted of President of Lincolnton High School Sports Boosters, Habitat for Humanity, and Gideon’s.  He served as General Chairman and Director for several county wide religious crusades as well as a Deacon, and was on various committees with his church.

Dr. Smith received a BS in Education from Western Carolina University, an MA and EDS from Appalachian State University.  He received his Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University and was in the Principal’s Executive Program at the University of North Carolina.

Highlights of his career include being a Presenter at International Reading Conference in Toronto, Canada, and a Presenter at International Conference in Stockholm, Sweden – Uppsala University.  He was also chosen as an ACSI Team Member, one of 40 Educators chosen to visit schools in Australia and New Zealand and submit a report to the U.S. Congressional Committee on Education.

He is survived by his wife and retired Kindergarten Teacher, Linda Cox Smith; three sons, Tom Smith and wife Kathy of TN, Tim Smith and wife Melissa of Lincolnton and Grayson Smith and special friend Wendy Starnes of Lincolnton; one brother, Harold Smith of Stanley; one sister, Shirley Rankin of  McAndenville; five grandchildren, Emily, Anna, Sydney, Camden and Olivia Smith.
