Avis Ann Johnson Beam
( June 10, 1936 - January 14, 2016 )
Mrs. Avis Ann Johnson Beam, age 79, of Wesleyan Church Road, Lincolnton, died Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Cardinal Care Center in Lincolnton.
Her funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016, at Long Shoals Wesleyan Church with Rev. Jon Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Beam was born June 10, 1936, in Lincoln County, to the late Columbus Avery Johnson and Jocie Frances Rhyne Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Dare Reese Beam, and her sister Marcella Ruth Childress. She worked in finance at the former First National Bank and Lincoln County Hospital until retirement. Her hobbies included drawing and painting, rescuing stray cats, and international travel. She helped establish the local chapter of the NC National Guard Auxiliary. In memory of her late husband, she established the Dare Reese “John” Beam Memorial Scholarship available to military family high school seniors statewide. With a concern for preserving and honoring the rich military history in this state, she donated much of her time and collected artifacts to the NC Military historical Society’s Museum near Fort Fisher.
She is survived by a son, Terry J. Burgin, and wife Kimberly; a granddaughter (also known as “Grammy’s Angel”), Amber Faith Burgin, two nieces and two nephews, Carol Cook (Richard) of Augusta, GA, Cynthia Minner (Mark) of Hickory, NC, Donald Childress (Lynne) of Jamestown, NC, Jon Mark Childress (Cynthia) of Fredericksburg, VA; and many great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to recognize the staff of Cardinal Healthcare on North Aspen Street, Hospice of Lincoln County, and other many caretakers for their care and support over the last 6 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Long Shoals Wesleyan Church Youth, 3032 Wesleyan Church Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
