Pastor Marvin Jack Rhyne

Pastor Marvin Jack Rhyne, 84, of Wilma Sigmon Road, Lincolnton, NC, died on Sunday, January 24, 2016. Pastor Rhyne was born to Grady Rhyne and Annie Workman Rhyne on May 16, 1931 in Vale, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty King Rhyne; a son, Scottie Joe Sisk; three brothers, William Dwight Rhyne, Robert Ray Rhyne, and Carl Rhyne; and a sister, Martha Jean Rhyne.

Pastor Rhyne was a graduate of Union High School, Lenoir Rhyne University, and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. During his career in the ministry, Pastor Rhyne served at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC; Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Mocksville, NC; St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Lincolnton, NC; and Salem Lutheran Church in Lincolnton, NC, where he served for 29 years.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War.

Pastor Rhyne‘s faith was the cornerstone of his life and his actions demonstrated his faith. He was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lincolnton, NC and  his beloved Sunday school class. Pastor Rhyne loved fishing, especially during his family’s annual November beach trip to Oak Island, NC, which was a special tradition in the Rhyne family. At home, Pastor Rhyne enjoyed tending to his garden, and he loved sharing the delicious vegetables he cultivated as much as he loved growing them. He was always quick with a joke, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and “granddogs.”

Pastor Rhyne is survived by his loving wife, Colleen Hawkins Rhyne; children, Cheryl Featherstone, Mark Rhyne and wife Bonita, Gayle Barnwell and husband Keith, Lisa Rhyne and Anthony Fox, and Suzanne Rhyne; grandchildren, Jennifer and Sarah Featherstone, Emily and Joey Beal, Michael and Savannah Rhyne, James and Natalie Barnwell, and Alex and Jadon Rhyne; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Biddix and Joseph and Taylor Beal.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton, NC. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 11 am at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Memorials may be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund, 216 South Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC.
