Claudia Murphy
( July 1, 1925 - October 16, 2016 )
Claudia Louise Holly Wolcott Murphy, 91, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at the Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville NC.  A Memorial Service of Remembrance will be held November 5, 2016 at 10:30 at Aldersgate CCRC, officiated by Chaplain Karen Moore.  The family will receive friends after the Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).

Born in Lincolnton, North Carolina on July 1, 1925, she was the daughter of Claud A Holly and Julia B Kaufmann.  She attended school in Lincolnton through graduation from Lincolnton High School. She then attended Winthrop College, in Rock Hill, SC studying education.  Because of WWII and gas rationing, Louise was unable to get home for most vacations thus graduating college in three years.

Upon completion of graduation from Winthrop in 1944, she moved to Charlotte and obtained a job teaching at Dilworth Elementary School.  With the exception of a few years off to be with her children, she completed her career of 25 years with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
Soon after she began teaching at Dilworth Elementary, she met US Navy veteran Duane N Wolcott.  They were soon married and had two children.  They continued to live in Charlotte where both children graduated from Myers Park High School.  Their daughter went on to graduate from UNC – Chapel Hill and their son from Central Piedmont. Duane suddenly passed away when Louise was in her early forties.

Several months later, a former high school friend came to pay his condolences.  They continued to see each other.  After dating for about 1-½ years, she married John F Murphy Jr. and added his three children to her family.  While living in Charlotte, she was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, starting in its Dilworth location and ending with their new church on Park Road.  She was Superintendent of Sunday School Classes, active in Women’s Circles, Couple’s Groups and also substituted as needed to play organ for Sunday church services.
In the early eighties, John and Louise moved from the Myers Park area of Charlotte to Lake Norman.  Louise loved living on the lake, swimming, boating, or just rocking on their porch enjoying the view. While living there they joined Community in Christ Lutheran Church in Huntersville.
John and Louise moved to Aldersgate Continuing Care Retirement Community in Charlotte in 2002, where Louise continued to live for the next fourteen years. They were some of the first couples to live in the new cottages on the small lake.  They made many new friends there and reacquainted with a surprising number of old friends.  They also joined St. Thomas Lutheran Church.  John passed away in 2008.  Louise moved to an independent living apartment and later to Cuthbertson Village.  There, she delighted in her friendships, craft activities, musical presentations and field trips.

Her parents, and both of her husbands, Duane N Wolcott and John F Murphy Jr preceded Louise in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Duanette (Day) H. Case and her husband Mike, of Cornelius NC, her son Michael C. Wolcott and his wife Patsy of Locust, NC, her stepson John F. Murphy III and his wife Elizabeth of Raleigh NC, her stepdaughter Mary Nell Murphy of Raleigh, NC, and her stepson Rev, Miller B. Murphy and his wife Kathy of Greenwood SC.
She is also survived by granddaughter Holly L. Webb and her husband Michael of Keller TX, grandson Jonathan L. Case and his wife Krissy, granddaughter Ryan Shedrick and her husband Revelle of Jacksonville, NC, Stephen Murphy and his wife Lindsey of Lexington, SC and Drew of Raleigh, NC and Andy Murphy and his wife Meredith of Columbia, SC.
