Mary Jane Gates Poovey
( August 21, 1928 - January 28, 2017 )
Mrs. Mary Jane Gates Poovey, 88, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 28, 2017.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Long Shoals Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley Ingle and Rev. Ken Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Poovey was born August 21, 1928, in Lincoln County, to the late Harris Grady Gates and Lola Green Gates. Mrs. Poovey was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Mr. Ralph James Poovey; by a daughter, Lola Poovey; and siblings Carmen Bryant and Dick Gates. Mrs. Poovey was a consummate mother and homemaker. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends until her declining health no longer allowed her to do so. Mrs. Poovey had an unwavering faith in God. She served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and choir member at Long Shoals Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include sons, Steve Poovey, and wife Cecilia, of Hillsville, Virginia; Rick Poovey, and wife Cindy, of Denver; daughter, Ann P. Spencer, and husband Jimmy, of Long Shoals; brother, Sid Gates, and wife Valerie, of Lincolnton; and sister, Nancy Raber of Ellenboro; grandchildren, Amy, Jason, Ronda, Shelley, Ricky, Tyler, Ethan, and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Andrew, Paige, Skye, Braedyn, and Kaleigh.
The family would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Coleen Parmer, Mrs. Poovey’s in-home caregiver, and to caregivers from Catawba Regional Hospice.
