Obituaries
David “Dave” Wayne Smith, 69 of Denver, NC passed to God’s arms Thursday, November 30 2017. Dave was born on July 25, 1948 in Media, PA to Sherman Wayne Smith and June Sarabelle (Clark) Smith. He was raised in Ford City, PA, graduating from Ford City High School in 1966.
A 1970 Graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Dave’s successful professional career dedicated 38 years to State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance. Dave formed long-lasting relationships through his work in Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre, and 17 years in Naperville, IL.
Dave and Courtenay deSaussure Smith married in 1988 and lovingly parented Callie Swanlund (who parents Elliott and Linus with son-in-law Phillip). Dave/Dad is lovingly remembered by sons Matthew Smith (Lisa), Ryan Smith (Shannon), grandchildren Holden and Claudia; brothers Douglas Smith (Andrea) and Warren Smith (Gretchen); and sister Nancy (Smith) Fryman (Rich).
Dave is an 8-year survivor of pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed only days following his retirement from State Farm in 2009, Dave was blessed with an incredible “retirement” in Denver, NC. While born a yankee, Dave is a Country Boy at heart. His love of auto racing (NASCAR in particular) took him from Friday night dirt tracks to NASCAR races across the country. Dave’s “best day” might be cutting the grass, washing his truck and taking a spin on the jet skis with his girl Courtenay by his side. …and of course, coming home to find his trusty hound “Barney” waiting for him to wash off the skis.
Dave’s volunteer work with the East Lincoln Ministry and leadership in the Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake provided an outlet for his strong body, kind heart and sharp mind. Infused with the Holy Spirit throughout his life, Dave’s recent work is the embodiment of his spirit, dedication, and kindness toward humankind. Words here hardly express the individual impacts Dave has had on many people’s lives. We so very much cherish your prayers and support. Any additional gratitude you wish to express may be directed in Dave’s spirit to the following organizations.
