Ermintrude Little Mullen
( January 18, 1921 - December 20, 2017 )
Ermintrude Little Mullen went to be with the Lord on December 20, 2017. She passed away peacefully at home with her very special nurse who just happens to be her granddaughter at her side.
Born on January 18, 1921, she was the only child of Marcus Leopold and Florence Rhyne Little. A lifetime resident of Lincoln County, she graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1938. “Trudy” as she was affectionately called, married Lester Alfred Mullen after graduating from Queen’s College with a business degree in 1940. She worked at First National Bank and later at her husband’s insurance office. Because of her love for learning, Trudy returned to school in the 1960’s and received a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s in guidance and counseling, and a sixth year degree in administration. She worked in the Lincoln County School system for almost twenty years, first as a teacher, then as a guidance counselor at West Lincoln and Lincolnton High School, and finally as school psychologist for the county.
Ermintrude was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church for many years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and various other activities. She later became a member of Covenant Bible Church. Wherever she attended, she always put the Lord first in her life and served Him to the fullest. She had a kind and gentle spirit…always giving the Lord and others her very best.
Ermintrude and Lester were married for 66 years, until his death in 2007. They enjoyed an active life traveling throughout the world with family members and friends. Many people remember her for the wonderful trips she organized and directed. Ermintrude was the ultimate “people person,” never knowing a stranger, and happiest when “on the go.”
Ermintrude is survived by three children, Rev. Alfred Mullen and wife Beverly, Marcus Mullen and wife Patsy, and Florence Mullen Beam, all of Lincolnton; six grandchildren, Rev. Shannon Mullen of Beaufort, SC, Dr. Laura Dobson of Hickory, Matthew Mullen of Mt. Holly, and Mark Mullen, Julie Johnson, and John Mark Brooks all of Lincolnton. She also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren and one very special caregiver, Jewel Rinck who was her constant companion for many years. Although she has gone to a place where there is no pain, only peace and happiness, she will be greatly missed as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
A service to celebrate Ermintrude’s life will be held at 12 noon on Friday, December 22 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:45 before the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 216 South Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092 or the charity of your choice.
