John Nicholas Robinson
( July 14, 1937 - January 10, 2018 )
John Nicholas Robinson, 80, died Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at his residence, Alexandria Place, Oak Hollow Road, Gastonia.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hardin. The Rev. Jonathan Schnibben will officiate.
Born July 14, 1937, John was the son of the late William Franklin and Sudie Friday Robinson of Lincoln County. He was also preceded in death by an older brother, William Franklin Robinson, Jr., and a younger brother, Stephen Gordon Robinson.
During his childhood, John raised guinea pigs, collected coins, gardened and grew gladiolas and had more than a healthy interest in the Civil Air Patrol for the war effort. John graduated from High Shoals Elementary and attended Dallas High School where he pursued shop, agriculture and went out for football. At the age of 14, his education ended when he was struck by a drunk driver while coming home from school. The injuries and years of recovery left him with mental and physical impairment. Because of his disabilities, he was not able to work at a regular job and instead relied on his “genius” skills that could make the unrepairable work. John used his self-taught and innate skills to repair radios, television sets, appliances and electronic devices for family and friends. John also was believed to have nine lives as he had survived numerous life or death medical emergencies throughout his life.
He is survived by three sisters, Gretchen Robinson of Lincolnton Sarah Vinson of Troutman, and Jill Robinson of Simpsonville, SC; nephew, Todd Vinson; and two great-nephews, Alex and Eddy of Minnesota; niece, Jennifer Powell; and great-niece, Shelby Powell of Troutman.
The family expresses grateful appreciation for the love and support given by the staff at Alexandria Place during his lengthy stay.
