Hazel was born in Liberty, SC on September 7, 1923.  She graduated from Liberty High School in 1941 and went on to marry her sweetheart, Alfred Andrews, on December 24, 1941.  While Alfred served in the US Army during WWII, Hazel resided with her family in the mountains of upstate SC, to work and have help raising their son, Butch.   Upon Alfred’s return, he relocated their family to Liberty, SC, and started his career in the textile industry.  Before leaving Liberty, they welcomed their first daughter, Becky.  “Pop” as she lovingly referred to Alfred, moved his family first to Newton, NC, then later on to Lincolnton, NC, where they made their home and welcomed their third child, Melissa.  While raising their children, Hazel worked in the textile mills and expanded her knowledge in office work as a bookkeeper, payroll clerk, and ultimately retired as Finance Officer of Lincoln County Schools.

Hazel raised their children in many active roles at River View Baptist Church.  She led the GAs, taught Sunday school, where she found her calling teaching the “Mother’s Class”, the oldest ladies of the church.  Many years later, she joined First Baptist Church of Lincolnton, where she remained a member until her death.

Hazel had many adventures and interests.  She traveled extensively with family, friends and members of one of her “ABC” clubs.  She belonged to Business & Professional Women’s Club (BPW) and served in many capacities, up to and including, North Carolina President.  In 1984, Hazel was selected as Woman of the Year for Lincolnton.

Hazel enjoyed researching her family genealogy and after much hard work, she qualified to join the Southern Stars Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Jacob Forney Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was also a member of the Lincoln Chapter #114 of Eastern Star.  Hazel also cherished her membership in the Priscilla Book Club, hosting and presenting over many years her love of reading.

A true Southern Belle, Hazel was always proud of her Southern Heritage.  She taught her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren the love of family, the respect of tradition and the love of life and adventure.  Hazel’s last days were full of family moments where her two great-great grandchildren, Avery and Oliver, captured her heart and brightened her days with their facial expressions and giggles.

Hazel’s family wish to thank the following ladies for their loving care and dedication over the last six months: Lisa Navey, Sherry Rhodes, Priscilla Bess, Elizabeth Falvey and Amanda Collins.

Hazel’s Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church of Lincolnton, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.  Visitation will begin at 1:30, with the service following at 3:00.  Burial will be held at Hollybrook of Lincolnton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC 28092 or UDC Restoration Fund, PO Box 1875, Lincolnton, NC 28093.
