Elizabeth Schrum Carpenter
( July 11, 1924 - July 29, 2018 )
Elizabeth Schrum Carpenter, age 94, of N. Grove Street in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, July 29, 2018.

Her funeral service will be held 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2018, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Earlynne Bartley and Rev. Dixon Free officiating.  Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:50 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Elizabeth was born July 11, 1924, in Greensboro, North Carolina.  She was preceded in death by her parents, William L. and Ella Schrum; brothers, William, Jake, and Charles Schrum; and her husband, Kenneth Carpenter.

She grew up in Lincoln County and graduated from Lincolnton High School.  Shortly after high school, she began working in the Register of Deeds office for Walter Boring.  She worked her way up over the years from clerk to deputy Register of Deeds.  When Mr. Boring announced his retirement in 1962, she announced her candidacy for the office.  In her first primary election, she defeated three gentlemen in the Democratic primary.  This allowed her to become the first woman in Lincoln County history to appear on a general election ballot.  Elizabeth went on to not only win the general election in her first attempt, but she led the entire ticket in total votes.  She proudly and faithfully served the citizens of Lincoln County until her retirement in 1990.  Their appreciation and trust was evident in her many subsequent re-elections, many without any opposition from either party.  She was a proud Democrat with a rich sense for the history of the party and total dedication her elected office and her constituency.  Being the pioneer that she was, in 1962, she was proud to finally see a woman nominated for President.  It is safe to say that she was very dismayed with many current politicians and the current political climate in general.  Elizabeth also was a faithful and active member of The First Baptist Church of Lincolnton for almost all of her adult life until her declining health curtailed her activity.

Elizabeth was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family and all others that she touched during her long and fruitful life.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth L. (Buddy) Carpenter, and wife Susan; daughter, Elizabeth A. (Libby Ann) Gordon, and husband Jim; grandchildren, Jennifer Carpenter, Beth Bumgardner, and husband Joey, and Natalie Gordon; and great-granddaughter, Eliza Bumgardner.

The family would like to thank our special “angel”, Shannon Reep, for her unfaltering love and care for Libby over the past several years.  Special thanks also go to Anna Reynolds, Shelly Steed, Makayla Auton, and the great caregivers from Stress Free Homecare (Angel, Tracy, Penny, Rebecca, Denise, and others).  Their fantastic care allowed her to remain at home during her final years.  Appreciation also goes to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County for all their efforts on Elizabeth’s behalf.

The family requests that anyone interested send a donation in Elizabeth’s name to your favorite charity.
