Russell Ray Thornburg
( January 30, 1928 - June 6, 2019 )
Russell Ray Thornburg, age 91, of Carolina Care in Cherryville, and formerly of Lincolnton, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tony Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. in the Philathea Class of the church.
Ray was born January 30, 1928, in Cabarrus County, to the late Robert Hall Thornburg and Irene Hammett Thornburg. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Brinkley Thornburg. He served in the United States Navy, and then worked for BellSouth as a public relations manager. Ray was a faithful steward at First United Methodist Church, loved golf, enjoyed spending time in the yard, and delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife for twenty years.
He is survived by a son, Bobby Thornburg, and wife Sharon, of Bessemer City; a daughter, Jill Childers, and husband Kelly, of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Jamie Thornburg, Allyson Cunningham, Holly Jones, and Heather Suttle; and four great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Carolina Care in Cherryville for the love and support they gave our family while caring for Ray.
