Faye Kelly Staton
( September 11, 1928 - September 18, 2019 )
Faye Kelly Staton, age 91, of Lincolnton, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Covenant Church of Lincolnton, with Rev. Dr. Charles Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 until 2:15 p.m. at the church.
Faye was born September 11, 1928, in Mt. Holly, North Carolina, to the late William Melton Kelly and Bessie Taylor Kelly. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur “Bo” Staton, one grandson, Cannon Taylor Staton, and by nine of her sisters. Those sisters are Annette Howard (husband, Hazel), Nell Wilson (Wayne), Berta Rabb (Harold), Sony Hair (Sid), Evelyn Henry (M.J.), “Deedee” Eller (Otha), Moncey Harrison (Fairfax), “Jackie” Archer (Bob), and “Billie” McDowell (Bob, living).
She is survived by a daughter, Lydia Staton Reid, and husband Rob, of Lincolnton; four sons, W. David Staton, and wife Jerrie Sue, of Lincolnton, Eric J. Staton, and wife Leigh Anne, of Stanley, A. Kelly Staton, and wife Denise, of New Bern, and Joel “Jody” Ward Staton of Lincolnton; a sister, Tommie Mulkey (Lewis, deceased) of Denver; and a brother, Colin Kelly (Elaine) of Lowell, NC. She has 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Early in life, Faye and her numerous sisters loved music, eventually forming an a cappella group, The Singing Kelly Sisters. They performed on WBT am radio, doing commercials in addition to entertainment on the Grady Cole and Arthur Smith programs, and at meetings of community group organizations. They were a spirited group, adding humorous skits and patter to their beautiful music. Family gatherings of the Kelly family in their adulthood were large, wonderful events marked by their delightful singing, incredible Southern home cooking, and dozens of children. Faye’s homemade biscuits were the best that have ever been baked.
Faye, her husband, and growing family spent their first fourteen years together as members of the construction workers’ village of Duke Power Company, where both their fathers were also employed, moving often as power plants were built and enlarged. They eventually purchased the Western Auto Store in downtown Lincolnton, which they operated for almost three decades. After a brief retirement, Faye worked for years as a sales clerk at Belk-Shrum department store in Lincolnton.
Faye was always active in her churches, often singing in the choir, and teaching in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also served her community in a number of ways. She worked as a Guardian Ad Litem in the Lincoln County program, a volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program, volunteer counselor of the Covenant Love Crisis Pregnancy Center. She participated in the Lincoln Community Chorus and the Lincolnton Singing Christmas Tree.
