Rev. Fred Wayne Brockway

Rev. Fred Wayne Brockway, 74, passed away June 4, 2020 at Peak Resources, Cherryville.

Fred was born June 18, 1945 in Norfolk, VA, son of Fred and Hattie Brockway.  He grew up in Jacksonville. FL and accepted Jesus as his Savior and was baptized at age 10. A graduate of Holmes County High School in Bonifay, FL, Fred met his future wife, Sandra Christmas Brockway, there.

A 1967 graduate of Florida State University with a degree in communications, Fred’s early career experiences included broadcasting, economic planning and civil preparedness. He served in the Army National Guard for 8 years. Fred surrendered to full time ministry in 1980 and devotedly served the following churches in NC as administrator: Green Street Baptist, High Point; Carmel Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Charlotte; First Baptist Church, Lincolnton.

In 2002, Fred was called as pastor to Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Maiden, NC where he joyfully served until retiring in 2011. He and Sandy then joined Boger City Baptist Church in Lincolnton.

Fred was a loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather and had many passions. Among them: amateur radio, electronics, computers, NC mountains, yardwork, driving, walking, family genealogy, prayer and Bible study, bluegrass and gospel music.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Sandy; daughter Melissa Brockway Smith and husband Tim of Lincolnton; grandchildren Anna Smith and Camden Smith of Lincolnton; brother Larry (Gail) Brockway of Pace, FL; brother Wesley (Susan) Brockway of Louisville, KY; and sister Caryl Parks of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

Fred will be dearly missed by all who were blessed by his presence, love, humor, wisdom, helpfulness and gentleness.   He was a man of unshakable faith and great courage during his battle with dementia.

Sincere appreciation is extended to the memory care staff at Peak Resources in Cherryville, NC, who treated Fred with dignity and loving kindness during his stay.

A private memorial service will be held on June 9th at Boger City Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Bigham officiating. It may be viewed later at bogercitybaptist.org, then Livestream. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Redding officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boger City Baptist Church building fund, 2201 E. Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
