Eugene Julius Pilkington
( March 31, 1931 - July 6, 2020 )
Eugene Julius Pilkington, 89, of Lincolnton, N.C., died, Monday, July 6, 2020 after battling cancer. Eugene was born on March 31, 1931, in Swain County, N.C. to the late James Andrew Pilkey and Haley Hord Pilkey.
Eugene served in the United States Air Force during the 1950s. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed in various cities in the United States, as well as in Germany. After his time in the Military, Eugene attended a North Carolina State University Mechanic Certificate Program. Eugene spent his career as a Diesel Mechanic for Carolina Freight Carriers in Cherryville, N.C. Eugene was a dedicated Christian and was most proud of his service as a Lay Witness Missionary. He spent about thirty years traveling across the United States witnessing and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Andy Pilkington; his parents, James and Haley Pilkey; and his sister, Irene Blanton. Eugene is survived by his wife, Sarah Maxine Whitesides Pilkington, to whom he was married for 69 years. Eugene is also survived by his son, Randy Pilkington (Kathy) of Belmont, N.C.; his son Julius Lynn Pilkington (Ann) of Matthews, N.C.; and his brother, Charlie Pilkey of Gastonia, N.C.
Eugene was also a proud “Pawpaw” to many grandchildren. He is survived by his granddaughters, Rachel Pilkington, Kristy Copeland (Lance), and Brittani Medina (Edmond); and his grandsons, John Pilkington (Jaimee), Mark Pilkington, Noah Pilkington, and Joshua Pilkington (Torie). He is also survived by many great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Eugene’s life will be planned after the threat of the COVID-19 Pandemic has passed.
