“Pris” was born August 21, 1923 in Lincoln County to the late John H. and Mary Warlick Weaver. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her step-father, Burton Payseur; her brothers: Rev. Marshall Weaver, Craig Weaver, W.B. Payseur, Jr., and Bob Payseur; her husband, Ralph Elliott Mauney; and cherished friends: Vivian Bynum, Ruth Stroup, Mary Beal, Margaret Lawing, Frances Wood, Lib Goodson, Catherine Fletcher, and Farrie Blackburn.

Pris is survived by her beloved sisters and brother: Nancy P. Burgin, Shirley P. Fawcett and Jerry Payseur; her two sons: John Elliott Mauney, his wife Debra Hicks Mauney, and their daughter Lori Ann Mauney, and Phillip Ralph Mauney, his wife Lisa Mundy Mauney, and their daughter Anna Mauney McGinnis. Just two months ago, Anna and husband, Zane, presented Pris with a beautiful great-granddaughter, Cora Ruth. Pris’ pride and joy were her granddaughters, and she was overjoyed with the addition of a great-granddaughter.

A member of the “greatest generation,” Pris is best described as an entrepreneur and pioneer. Married to Ralph Mauney of Lincolnton on July 4, 1941, Pris soon became a Navy wife during World War II. She was a welder at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Co. in Baltimore, MD where Ralph served. After the war, Pris and Ralph returned to Lincolnton where her first challenge was to own and operate the first privately owned rest home in Lincoln County on Andrews Drive. With two small sons, she and Ralph took care of fifteen older folks offering them a happy homelike atmosphere for 18 years.

In 1968, along with sister-in-law Pauline Payseur, Pris opened the first fitness center in Lincolnton, The Slim Gym Fitness Salon, on Main Street. In 1969, Pris purchased at auction the Gamble Hospital building on Main Street and turned it into a successful office building. Along with her many firsts, she was one of the early female realtors and ran a successful real estate business for 40 years.

In 1970, she leased and restored the old depot property (now a city park). Along with George Stoudmire, she helped to organize the first Farmer’s Market in Lincolnton. In the 1980’s Pris, along with son, Phillip, built the first town houses in Lincolnton, Aspen Court.

On June 3, 1990, Pris married Jess Hoover of Carthage, Missouri. Jess preceded Pris in death on July 4, 2000.A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, she regularly attended and held many offices during her life: The Board of Stewards, Finance Committee, President UMW, Circle Chairman, the first woman to serve as Chairman of Trustees, and on the district committee. Pris loved her community and delivered meals on wheels for 19 years.

For over 20 years, Pris’ sons and their families gathered in her home for Sunday dinner. This was a time of sharing the week’s events and for the granddaughters to become close.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 201 East Main Street, Lincolnton or Christian Ministries, PO Box 423, Lincolnton.
The family of Pris Mauney wishes to thank Dr. Neveen Habashi-Falls, Dr. Claude T. Falls, and the entire staff at North State Medical Group of Lincolnton for their willingness to meet any of Pris’ needs throughout the years. The family also wish to express their sincere appreciation to caregivers, Jane Noles, Linda Hall, and Margaret Bynum for the personalized care and loving attention. The family also extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends and family who took time to visit and send cards. And just as close to Pris’ heart, the family thanks the Lincolnton Fire Department whom she called “my boys” for their assistance at any hour.

Pallbearers include Steve Payseur, Carroll Payseur, Tim Weaver, Doug Bynum, Steve Herman, and Mike Macomson.
