John Clarence Plaxco
( November 9, 1938 - October 19, 2020 )
John Clarence Plaxco, 81, went home to be with his Lord peacefully at his home on Lake Norman October 19, 2020, surrounded by his loving spouse and children.  He was born November 9, 1938, in Wilmington, NC, to Robert Frank Plaxco, Sr. and Bess Saine Miller Plaxco.  At the time of his birth, he weighed only three pounds and was the smallest baby to be born at New Hanover Hospital and survive.  He had an exciting childhood growing up in the small fishing town of Southport, NC, where his father was part owner and manager of Brunswick Navigation.  By the age of nine he was flying one of the company’s private planes and received his pilot’s license at the age of 16.

John graduated from Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, VA, and went on to study at Clemson University.  He married the love of his life, Joyce Hallman, and raised their family in Lincolnton, NC.  They celebrated 60 years of marriage in June 2020.  John worked many years in the textile industry in sales traveling all over North and South America, and retired from Duke Energy as a Senior Programmable Control Specialist.   John was a faithful supporter of Fishburne Military School and the Wally Bynum Caravan Airstream Club.   In retirement, he and Joyce traveled the US extensively visiting all 48 contiguous states multiple times in their Airstream.  John loved nothing more than spending time with his family, camping with his Airstream friends and family, and traveling this beautiful country.  Through work and pleasure he traveled to over 15 countries, all Canadian Provinces, and the contiguous US.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Robert Frank Plaxco, Jr this year of Covid.  Surviving in addition to his wife, Joyce Plaxco is his son John Martin “Mart” Plaxco and wife Carolyn of Denver; daughter Mary Lynne Baxter and husband James of Lincolnton, grandson Jacob Miller Plaxco of Denver; his sister Bess Miller Smith of Greenville, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Out of precaution to Covid-19 the family will only be receiving close friends and family at the home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Fishburne Military School, 225 S Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980; Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O.
