Jason Rush Sain
( February 11, 1982 - December 10, 2022 )
Jason Rush Sain, age 40, died unexpectedly at his home in Vale on December 10, 2022. Preceding him in death were his grandparents Hubert and Gladys Sain of Vale and Robert and Lucille Hedrick of Statesville, NC.
Jason was a beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. Born on February 11, 1982 in Henrico County, Virginia, he was the youngest son of Dr. Larry and Beth Sain of Cat Square and younger brother of Andrew Sain (Kristina) of Crouse, NC. His aunts Lynn Smith (Tommy) and Karen Sain (Renee) and uncle Tracy Sain all helped raise him and were important influences in his life. He was especially close to several cousins – Thomas and Daniel Smith who were his hunting and fishing buddies and Tyler Sain who shared his love of sports, especially baseball.
After graduating from West Lincoln High School in 2000, Jason attended Appalachian State University where he earned a BS in General Mathematics (2004) and a MS in Math Education-College Teaching (2007). While in graduate school, he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Math Department at ASU. In 2010, he joined the Arts and Sciences Department of Gaston College as a mathematics instructor. He was a respected colleague and popular teacher there. He was intelligent, with interests in many areas, but especially mathematics. Quick witted and with a knack for vocabulary, he always enjoyed a clever “play-on-words” with his family.
Always athletic, he participated in football, wrestling and baseball. As a sophomore, he was a member of the National Runner Up Cherryville Post 100 American legion Baseball team. As a senior, he was a starter for the first state championship wrestling team at West Lincoln. After graduating college he returned and coached for the Post 100 Junior Legion baseball team for 10 years. He loved the challenge and strategy of coaching. Being a country boy he often walked barefoot in the grass of the baseball field – only putting on his cleats at the last minute.
In recent years, he enjoyed doing sports commentary for KTC Broadcasting for high school football, baseball and American Legion. He liked to hunt and fish, collect sharks teeth at the beach, play video games and go white-water kayaking with friends.
There was a special place in his heart for coaching kids. In addition to the many young men he coached on his Junior Legion baseball teams, he was often asked by friends to work with their child in individual practice sessions, help coach their child’s team in baseball or to improve their kayaking technique in the family pool.
As a native of Cat Square, he had a soft spot for stray cats, especially kittens. They would be immediately scooped up, fed, bathed, taken to the vet and adopted into the family.
There was no better friend than Jason. If you needed help with a project, a fun companion for an adventure, or someone to sit with you and listen – Jason was your man. All his friends have “Jason stories.” He did not see age or position in life when connecting with people – he saw a person. If there was a need, he reached out to help.
He was a scholar, teacher, coach and compassionate friend. Witty remarks and quotes from well-known movies and TV shows made him an entertaining companion. His polite, soft-spoken, laid back personality endeared him to family and friends alike. He was much-loved and will be greatly missed. Truly One-Of-A-Kind!
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vale, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:45 at the church prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 7, Vale, NC 28168.
