Jimmie Claxton Bowers

Jimmie Claxton Bowers, age 94, of Lincolnton, died on Monday, January 30, 2023.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2023, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Reed Conley officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Forest Lawn West Cemetery in Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 12:45 p.m. on Monday at Warlick Funeral Home.
Jimmie C. Bowers was born to Delbert and Callie Mae Bowers on November 14, 1928, in Morganton, NC. He grew up in Morganton where he attended the local elementary schools. He graduated from Morganton High School in 1945.
Jimmie began his professional career delivering the local paper by bicycle. Soon he accepted an offer to work at the soda fountain at the Cornwell Drug Store in Morganton. It was during this time that he developed an interest in becoming a pharmacist. After graduating from high school, Jimmie attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in pharmacy (1945-1949).
After graduation, Jimmie was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany on a medical train as the pharmacist. He served two years in the Army before returning home to his wife, whom he had married ten days before he departed.
Jimmie met the girl of his dreams at the hospital in Morganton where she was pursuing a degree in nursing. Jimmie married Charlene Scholl of Charlotte in 1951. They were happily married for over 60 years until her death. Together they had two daughters, Christine and Patricia. Jimmie is extremely proud of his five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Upon arrival home from the Army, Jimmie began work for the Cornwell Corporation of Morganton as a pharmacist at their store in Lincolnton. Jimmie worked as pharmacist and manager of the Economy Rexall Drug Store in downtown Lincolnton until it closed. He then worked at their sister store, Cornwell Drug Store in Lincolnton. The Cornwell stores were bought by Rite-Aid and later CVS. After working as a pharmacist for over 50 years, Jimmie retired from CVS.
Since his arrival in Lincolnton, Jimmie has been very active in the community. Soon after coming to Lincolnton, Jimmie and Charlene joined the First Presbyterian Church of Lincolnton. He served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder in the church. He has been a member of Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors of Christian Ministries of Lincolnton.
In September of 1955, Jimmie joined the Lincolnton Lions Club. During his time in the Lions Club, Jimmie was busy helping with fundraisers such as selling tickets at local carnivals sponsored by the Lions Clubs, selling fruitcakes and brooms, and in the past few years raising money to support the Christmas VIP Party for the visually impaired of Lincolnton. During the years, Jimmie has held all major offices at the local level and a few at the state level. The Lincolnton club awarded Jimmie “Lion of the Year” three times. He has also been awarded the James Stickley Fellow at the state level and the Melvin Jones Fellow at the international level.
He is survived by his daughters, Christine Bowers Thomas (William) of Cherryville, and Patricia Bowers Carpenter (John) of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Crystal Haas (Dayson), Jennifer Thomas, John Carpenter III (Catherine), Anna Marie Gilbert (Jeremy), and Emily Dobbins (Jacob); and six great-grandchildren, Dayson Cole Haas, John Michael Haas, Lindsey Carpenter, Rachel Gilbert Jonah Dobbins, and Hank Dobbins.
