Mary Gilbert Hoyle

Mary Gilbert Hoyle, 92, formerly of Lincolnton, passed away on November 19, 2023, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC
Mary was born in Lincoln County on January 15, 1931, to the late Mike J. and Bessie Hartsoe Gilbert. She graduated from Union High School, and she earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University. She retired from Lincoln County Schools with 30 years of service as a teacher. She was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church.
Mary had a great sense of humor and an air of humility and kindness. She loved to share her homemade desserts, especially persimmon pudding, with many of her friends and neighbors. She loved traveling with her husband to all seven continents, visiting more than ninety countries. They visited all 50 states and every Canadian province.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Hoyle; brother, James O. Gilbert; and sisters, Helen Davis and Linda Boes.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Vickie Hoyle of Denver; daughter and son-in-law, Laraine and Terry Middleton of Denver; brother, Ralph Gilbert (Jan) of Sarasota, FL; sisters, Jean Ritchie (Bill) of Charlotte and Judy Gilbert of Lincolnton; grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie and Chuck Dorton, Megan and Rob Blanke, Jamie and Elizabeth Middleton, Mike and Christie Middleton, Nick and Missy Hatley, Candice and Matthew Morton; great-grandchildren, Alex Dorton, Mallory Dorton, Landon Blanke, Ethan Blanke, Parker Middleton, Oliver Middleton, Chalmers Middleton, Kinson Middleton, Kendall Middleton, Eve Hatley, Nathan Morton, and Parker Morton.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. at Warlick Funeral Home, Lincolnton. A memorial service, officiated by Dr. Susan Roddey, will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Lincolnton.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
