Kenneth and Sarah Wehunt
( May 9, 1935 - June 14, 2024 - May 2, 1940 -June 13, 2024 )
Husband and wife, Kenneth Carl and Sarah Booth Wehunt of Iron Station passed away peacefully within hours of one another on June 13th and June 14th.

The beloved couple met at Balls Creek Campground during one of the historic revival camp meeting weeks everyone still talks about with fondness. They fell in love and were married on May 5, 1963.

Ken and Sarah both graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and had successful careers serving the Lincoln County community. Ken was the Lincoln Hospital administrator until retirement, and Sarah worked for Lincoln County Social Services until her retirement. They were beloved for their generosity and heart for service to the Lincoln County community, their church, their friends, and neighbors.

Ken and Sarah shared an active social life with family and friends. They loved going on trips together and had a unique way of blending those trips into ones that combined Ken’s love of antiques and nature with Sarah’s love of shopping. One of their favorite spots on the map was Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The picturesque natural beauty of those mountains for Ken, combined with the abundance of shopping for Sarah made it a go to spot for many vacations with family.

Ken was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. His happy place was his hunting club in Lexington, NC named Wildcat Mountain. Ken loved to be in nature and lived for the early cool mornings in a deer stand or the slow quiet evenings fishing on the lake there.

After he retired, if he wasn’t on a hunting trip out west or at Wildcat, you could find him tending his massive home garden and cooking or grilling for an event or family party.

Although Sarah wasn’t the ‘pioneer woman’, she was content to spend time at Wildcat with Ken. On those holidays, you could always find her shopping in Lexington with friends and family or sitting on the porch reading a good book while she waited for Ken to return from hunting or fishing on the lake.

Sarah cherished her family and friends most of all and was beloved by everyone who met her. She enjoyed her women’s group at church and maintained many lifelong friendships into her retirement years. Ken was fond of saying Sarah was busier in retirement than she was when working. Not a week went by that she didn’t have a lady’s luncheon or some other event to attend.

Aside from Ken and their daughter Jennifer, the great loves of Sarah’s life were her cats. She adopted several cats over her lifetime and loved them all well.

Ken and Sarah had a lifelong love that lasted for over 60 years. They will always be remembered and loved by those who knew them.

Ken and Sarah Wehunt were preceded in death by their parents, Frank C. Wehunt and Donnie Lee Keener Wehunt and Dr. Hubert E. Booth and Mildred Carpenter Booth, as well as Ken’s brother, William F. (Bill) Wehunt and his wife Carrie Heavner Wehunt.

Ken and Sarah are survived by their beloved daughter Jennifer, Ken’s sister Mary Wehunt Frye, and many family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 1:00 pm until 2:45 pm at McKendree Methodist Church, Lincolnton. A memorial service at the church will follow at 3:00 pm with Pastor Greg  Richard officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Lincoln County Humane Society, PO Box 23, Lincolnton, NC 28093.
