Obituaries
Allen Skinner Hubbard, III of Lincolnton died Sunday, November 17th peacefully at his home on South Cedar Street. He will always be remembered as a sunny-natured, happy husband, father, and grandfather. His goodness and kindness shone through his many hours spent serving Lincolnton as President of the Lincolnton Rotary, and volunteering at Christian Ministries, the local hospital, and on the boards of the Arts Council and Habitat for Humanity, as well as at 12-step meetings for many years.
Born in Charlottesville, VA in 1938 to Ann Wheeler and Allen Hubbard Jr, he spent his childhood on Long Island, NY. After graduating from Millbrook School, he attended Colby College in Maine where he met his future wife of 63 years, Rosemary Blankenship.
He loved his family, his community and God. He will be missed by his wife, Rosemary; sons, Phillip Hubbard of Lincolnton, and Michael Hubbard and his wife Jennie of Charlotte; daughter, Rachel Hubbard Lightfoot and her husband Jack of Ringgold, Georgia; brother, Frost Hubbard and his wife Melissa of Massachusetts; grandsons Bennett and Reid Hubbard, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Wheeler and Allen Skinner Hubbard Jr, as well as his youngest brother William. Allen also joins his late grandsons Michael Hubbard and Adam Landry in watching over all of us from above.
Allen enjoyed a fine career as a petroleum geologist in Louisiana and as an environmental geologist in North Carolina, serving neighborhoods in West Charlotte affected by industrial pollution. He worked tirelessly to warn and educate others about ensuing climate change. As a natural athlete, Al ran many half-marathons, was a century club cyclist, climbed mountains and frequented the local YMCA faithfully. He also enjoyed music. Learning to play guitar late in life, he attended local jam sessions and performed with Barry Howard’s Vagabonds.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Emanuel Reformed Church on Main Street with Rev. Michael Baldonado officiating. A brief inurnment will follow at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 1:00p.m.until 3:00 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home.
The Hubbard family wishes to thank the nurses who provided such excellent care at the end of Allen’s life, especially Karen Leatherman of Hospice and Allison Neal.
