Joe McCoy Rudisill
( October 6, 1948 - December 18, 2024 )
Joe McCoy Rudisill of Newton, NC, left his temporary home to be in the arms of Jesus on December 18, 2024, after a period of declining health.
Joe was born on October 6, 1948, in Lincoln County, to the late Pearline Poole Rudisill and Calvin C. Rudisill. He was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in December 1969. He fought in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in December 1971. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and Meritorious Mast Rifle- Marksman Vietnamese Tech Service Honor Medal. He loved his country!
He was known as an avid sports fan, hunter, and lifelong member of Sardis Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed attending various sporting events including football, baseball, basketball, and softball at the local high school, Fred T. Foard, where he and his wife graduated from in 1967 and his children graduated from too, as well as rooting for the Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears, UNC Chapel Hill Tarheels, Carolina Panthers, and the Atlanta Braves. He spent many hours at Startown Optimist Park and Mountain View Recreation coaching little league baseball. He coached his two sons in baseball and loved to watch his grandsons, Davin play football and Connor play baseball, as well. His granddaughter, Mallory, did no wrong in pawpaw’s eyes! He enjoyed bird hunting and rabbit hunting with his sons and hunting buddies. You could also find Joe frequently attending bluegrass festivals as bluegrass music would always get his feet moving. He enjoyed watching his daughter clog at Sim’s BBQ and Maggie Valley Stomping Grounds. He never met a stranger, and if he did, they quickly became friends. He was a barber and worked in cable manufacturing, retiring from CommScope after 35 years. He will be missed by many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife of 27 years, Gale Speagle Rudisill. Left to treasure his memory are his daughter, Celeste (Will) Caulder of Columbia, SC; and two sons, Nathan Rudisill and Sheldon Rudisill, both of Vale, NC. His grandchildren, Davin, Connor, and Mallory Caulder of Columbia, SC, were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane (Bill) Shillito of Newton, NC; Vickie (Fred) Nance of Vale, NC; a niece, Summer (Jeremiah) Hull of Caesar, NC; three nephews, Nolan Nance of Vale, NC; Casey Shillito of Lewisville, NC; Ty (Monica) Shillito of Gaffney, SC; several great-nephews and great-nieces; and his mother-in-law, Faye Hoke of Newton, NC.
