Vivian Sawyer Hodges
( August 18, 1931 - January 14, 2025 )
Vivian Sawyer Hodges, age 93, of Lincolnton, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton, with Rev. Dr. Scott Hagaman, Rev. Phillip Campbell, and Rev. Dr. Dixon Free officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:15 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Vivian was born in Shawboro, NC, on August 18, 1931, to the late Emily Staples Sawyer and Coston S. Sawyer. She was the youngest of eight children who are all deceased.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Hodges; and two children, Fred Dalrymple (Susan), and Emily Shakra (Nick); three step-children, Linda George (DJ), Carol Tester, and Karen Willis (Ricky). She has six biological grandchildren, Julie Dalrymple Biggerstaff, Leslie Dalrymple Holland, Bradley Dalrymple, Lauren Shakra Conlin, Ali Shakra Henderer, and Nicholas Shakra; thirteen biological great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing and Appalachian State University with a degree in Health Education. She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years, then as a nursing and diabetic educator. After retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher in the school system for approximately fifteen years, working mostly with CNA students. She coordinated many support groups for cancer, arthritis, and fibromyalgia patients and nutrition classes for the public. She was a member of the Gaston/Lincoln Mental Health Board and the certificate of needs committee for hospital expansion, and an active member of the American Lung Association. She was a person of great faith, placing her trust in Jesus at the age of 9. She taught Sunday School and sang in the Adult and Senior choir.
