Samuel Allen Wilson, Jr.

Samuel Allen Wilson Jr., 82, of Macon, GA, passed away peacefully on February 11th, 2025.

Son of Dr. Samuel Allen Wilson and Mamie Cooper Wilson of Lincolnton, NC, Sam was born in Alexandria, LA where his father was briefly stationed during WWII.  Raised in Lincolnton, NC, he attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, and graduated from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and served as song leader.

There followed two years at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest, a stint as campaign manager for the Bo Calloway gubernatorial campaign, and two years as chief assistant to Congressman Charles Raper Jonas in Washington, DC. Sam worked for  three years as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch in Augusta, GA before attending and graduating from Mercer School of Law in Macon, GA in the early 1970’s. There he served  as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia before being appointed acting District Attorney. Sam retired from the Justice Department in 1999 following a long and distinguished career.

Sam is remembered as an avid tennis player, water sport enthusiast, and a very successful little league basketball coach. As a member of Lizella Bluegrass, Sam entertained local audiences for years with his voice, banjo, and guitar. He also served as president of the Ostomy Support Group of Middle Georgia and volunteered as a tax preparer in the central Georgia Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Sam is survived by his two children Samuel Allen Wilson III and Katherine Elizabeth Wilson and siblings Jane Wilson Finger and William G. Wilson. Additional survivors include grandchildren Hope Elizabeth Wilson, Samuel Allen Wilson IV, and Mitchell Cooper Wilson.

Per Sam’s wishes, there will be no public funeral ceremony or memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, an organization close to Sam's heart, in honor of his memory. A list of the various ways to donate can be found at
