Dr. John Edney Wise

Dr. John Edney Wise, MD, of Hickory, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at The Greens in Lincolnton, North Carolina. He was 91 years old.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County on September 20, 1933, he was the son of the late Robert Guy Wise and Sallie Hoover Wise. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert George Wise, and two sisters, Helen Wise Peeler and Betty Wise Bolick.
Dr. Wise graduated as valedictorian of Lincolnton High School in 1950. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Davidson College in 1954 and received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina in 1960. While interning at the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston, he was called to serve as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Medical Corps.
After his military service, he completed three years of postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In 1968, he opened his internal medicine practice in Hickory, North Carolina, where he faithfully served the community for over 40 years. In 1986, he was named Chief of Staff at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Upon retiring from private practice in 2009, Dr. Wise continued to serve at Frye Hospital by assisting the Credentials Committee and supporting the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department.
He is survived by four nephews: Duke Peeler (Myrl), Doug Wise (Kathy Dellinger), Tim Wise, and Michael Bolick (Vicki); two nieces: Donna Strong (Murray) and Lynda McKeown (Jim); three great-nephews; one great-niece; three great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VIA Health Partners, 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
