Vernon Ray Maxwell, Sr.
( May 27, 1945 - May 8, 2025 )
Vernon Ray Maxwell, Sr., age 79 of Iron Station, entered his Heavenly home on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at New Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Jody Pauley and Pastor Landon Propst officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Monday at the church.
Mr. Maxwell was born May 27, 1945, in Gaston County, to the late William Moss Maxwell and Ruth Eleanor Honeycutt Maxwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Maxwell, Larry Maxwell (Joyce), and Bob Maxwell; and son-in-law, Larry Ward. He was retired from auto body repair with in excess of 30 years at Withers Body Shop and self-employed at Vernon’s Auto Glass and Body. After retirement, he was a school bus driver at East Lincoln High School until COVID. He then went to work at Ideal Transport in Conover, NC as gatekeeper until his death.
Vernon enjoyed gardening, farming, and spending time with family. He was a loving father and grandfather. He was a founding member of New Grace Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and music leader. He loved serving the Lord, giving to others, and making everyone smile.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myra Heffner Maxwell; children, Terrye Ward (Mark Johnston) of Lincolnton, Vernon Ray Maxwell, Jr. (Carol) of Shelby, and Tiffany Horn (James) of Iron Station; six grandchildren, Rayney Maxwell, Maylan Maxwell, Mitchell Maxwell, Crystal Taylor (Neil), Caleb McMillion, and Courtney McMillion; great-grandchild, Peyton Taylor; and sister-in-law, Sandra Maxwell.
